The purpose of D. H. Lawrence as Anti-rationalist: Mysticism, Animism, and Cosmic Life in His Works is to demonstrate D. H. Lawrence as a mystic and animistic writer and perceiver of cosmic life in his works. Lawrence’s mysticism is sometimes referred to or discussed by some critics. But none of them discusses Lawrence as a mystic in his meditative poems, which I think deserve more attention. The first three chapters will discuss Lawrence as a mystic poet. The following seven chapters will discuss Lawrence as an animistic writer. His animistic perception in his works is not only a literary device but also based essentially on his own felt-experience just like his mystic experience in his meditative poems. Although some critics have paid attention to his animistic perception, they do not put much value on his felt-experience as such in a modern age which belittles it. His mystic and animistic experiences are antithetical to both modern materialism and rationalism, the dominance of which Lawrence severely criticises in many of his works. In this respect he can be called an anti-rationalist who goes against the modern tendency. Yet, he does not irrationally resort to animalism or primitivism. He believes that too much rationalism kills our intuitive sense of life, and what he insists on, therefore, is the restoration of the balance between reason and intuition. Being critical of the modern tendency, he incorporates mystic or animistic experience into his works so that modern readers may be awakened to that sense. The last two chapters will compare Lawrence with a Japanese novelist and two Ukiyoe painters to focus on Lawrence’s originality as a novelist and misunderstanding as a painter.

本書は、イギリスの作家D.H.ロレンス（１８８５－１９３０）の作品に特徴的な神秘主義、アニミズム、宇宙的生命をキー・ワードとし彼の反合理主義的特質を明らかにする。ロレンスが反合理主義的だからといって、原始主義や動物的欲望第一主義に帰るという訳ではない。ロレンスの多くのエッセイが示すように、彼は知的分析力の鋭い作家でもあった。彼が絶えず求めたものは知性と感性、理性と直感のバランスである。が、そのバランスを壊すものが他ならぬ当時の合理主義の跳梁であったが故に、必然的に反合理主義的立場を取らざるをえなかった。

最初の３章はロレンスの神秘主義に焦点を当て、主として詩を中心に論じる。続く６章ではロレンスのアニミズムと宇宙的生命の捉え方について、小説、エッセイなどを中心に論じる。最後の３章ではロレンスを日本の作家、画家と関連づけ、ロレンスの生命感の普遍性とともにロレンスとは異なった日本の作家、画家の独自性も明らかにする。伊藤整、与謝野晶子、安藤広重を各章で取り上げる。ただし、最終章は補足的な章ではあるが、広重の浮世絵に関するロレンス自身の誤解―８０年以上もの間全く問題視されなかった彼の誤解―を解くことを目的とする。
